Whats in a name? Depends on who is doing the naming. Here is a Hodel Family
anecdote that takes one of my warm fuzzy childhood memories and sixty-years
later, reveals it for what it really was. The truth being the cold, hard double entendre
of a psychopath.

Hodel's "Franklin House." First Hodel conversations received and recorded in the
basement of LAPD Hollywood Division Police Station. (Basement) 18 detectives would
continue monitoring and recording Dr. Hodel's statements 24/7 for next forty-days, until
on March 28, 1950, Hodel learned of the "stakeout" and fled the U.S. (See

Sixty-one years ago today, Mrs. Betty Bersinger, a resident of the Liemert Park
section of Los Angeles, while walking south in the 3800 block of Norton Ave, discovered
the nude, mutilated body of Elizabeth Short. Terrified by the sight, she ran south, to the
nearest occupied residence, where she placed an emergency call to the police. Based on her
description of the location, Mrs. Bersinger most probably called from the home of Los
Angeles physician, Dr. Walter Bayley, at 3959 S. Norton Ave. (Fifty years later, in 1997,
Larry Harnisch, a Los Angeles Times copy editor would go public with claims that he
believed this same Dr. Bayley was Elizabeth Short's killer.) (See Attached for complete

George Hill Hodel was born 100 years ago today.
He was born in downtown Los Angeles, at the Clara Barton Hospital, then located at 5th
& Olive Street. (Ironically, his birthplace was at the same corner where legend has
it that Elizabeth "Black Dahlia" Short was last seen exiting the Biltmore Hotel,
on Jan. 9, 1947, which began her mythical "Missing Week." (Jan. 9-14, 1947)
In fact, LAPD documented more than a dozen interviews with her close friends and reliable
witnesses (including an LAPD police officer) all of whom saw and spoke with Elizabeth on
each of her "missing days." (See August 1, 2007 entry for complete details.)

Killer Confesses On Tape
April 13, 2003

Los Angeles, Cal.
In a startling development, Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, after
interviewing the author, was handed not one, but two Black Dahlia murder files by the Los
Angeles County District Attorney's office. It was in the second file that Lopez discovered
the dramatic confession of Dr. George Hodel that he had killed Elizabeth Short.
In his article, Lopez revealed that in the same file an eyewitness actually placed
George Hodel with Elizabeth Short. Dr. Hodel's former girlfriend identified Short from
photographs and told police she had seen the two of them together.
In a second visit to the book, Lopez announced "I've now been told that Los
Angeles police are attempting to match prints of Hodel's father, Dr. George Hodel, to
material still on file from the 56-year-old case."
In a follow-up news article, Lopez revealed that his own confidential
source confirmed that the Los Angeles Police Dept. (LAPD) files link Dr. George
Hodel as a suspect in the Dahlia murder as well as naming him in a second murder of his
own secretary. LAPD would not release the name of the second victim, nor provide a date
that crime occurred. Lopez announces that, "'I've now been told that Los Angeles
police are attempting to match prints of Hodel's father, Dr. George Hodel, to material
still on file from the 56-year-old case."
